QUARTER ONE

Binder Assignment #1 "Nature's Nook"
This is what's you've been waiting for all summer!  I know you can hardly contain your enthusiasm and you've been checking hourly to see what's in store for you.  Well, the wait is over, here it is, the first art binder assignment of the 2013-2014 school year!  Hooray!

This one is a bit different as you won't be doing any drawing for this assignment.  You will, however, focus on a new medium, photography, as well as other key elements of good art, such as: color, texture, composition and balance. So let's begin:

I would first like you to look at the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration for this assignment. Begin by taking a moment to click on Goldsworthy's name which will take you to his website so that you can learn more about how he creates his art.  Browse his site, read about his work and look at the images he creates.  Using Goldsworthy's photographs as a starting point,  begin to explore the natural world around you.  With a digital camera, iPad, phone etc...in hand, get out into nature!
  • What do you see?  Look at the different textures surrounding you- from the bark of the tree to the sharp blades of grass jutting up from the ground.
  • Start taking photos - lots of them!
  • Get close to your subject matter, making sure your images are in focus and have adequate light.
  • Think about what you see in the picture plane/viewfinder.
  • What will your composition look like?
  • Will you create a natural environment or sculpture like Goldsworthy?
  • What will you include, what will you crop out of the picture?
  • Is there a focal point in your photograph?
Now that you have a device filled with amazing images of nature, select the one that you think is best. Choose an image that has good contrast of color, interesting textures and a well-balance composition. You can enhance your photo using the Photoshop Touch App on the iPad or Photoshop CS6 or simply submit it as is. Please try to stick as close as possible to the natural image you shot with your device.
These photographs will also be considered for the 2013-2014 USM yearbook, as the theme deals with nature.

You have two choice for submitting your art binder:
  1. print your image (no smaller than 5x7 and up to 8.5x11) on paper, put in plastic protector and submit in the art binder basket for your grade level. Don't forget to include your name.
  2. drop your digital file into your Art folder on GoogleDrive.  Please title your file Art_Binder1.    (if you want your photo considered for the yearbook, you must do this option as we need the digital files)
This assignment is due the week of September 16th. Please check your myUSM account to find your art section's exact due date.  Assignments MUST BE SUBMITTED THE DAY THEY ARE DUE, however, you are always welcome to submit your assignments early!!! Late work will result in missing points.

Here are two examples, the first by Goldsworthy and the second, by me!  Be sure to click on all the links provided to give you more information and guidelines for a successful photo.  Feel free to see me with any questions or concerns.
Happy photographing!

Binder Assignment #2 "Separated by Six"
Let your creative juices flow!  Begin by dividing your drawing paper into 6 sections using a pencil and a ruler.  Always begin your drawings in pencil first!!!  (you can use any size paper of good drawing quality) You can divide your paper however you want making the sections as big or as small as your want, just be sure to have 6 sections.
Please draw one of the following in each section:
  1. a realistic looking eye - try to use shading with your pencil (graphite #2 pencil or colored pencil)
  2. a design created only with lines- use a variety of line styles (marker or colored pencil)
  3. something from nature (colored pencil) - observe your object to help your drawing look more realistic
  4. your initals (marker or colored pencil)
  5. something you love (marker or colored pencil)
  6. anything you want (#2 pencil OR colored pencil OR marker)
Do your best and be creative!  I am not showing any examples for this one as I want to see what you can come up with on your own without an example.  This will help to push your originality and creativity!
This binder assignment is due the week of October 7th.  Please be sure to check myUSM for your section's exact due date!  Happy drawing!
